Choose Your Eyelash Extensions
Decide what style and color of eyelash extensions you prefer. You may want a more natural look or a more playful one, depending upon the occasion. While all lash extensions extend your lashes and make them look thicker, the trained professional applying your lash extensions can help you select the right look for your eyes. Your natural eyelashes do need to be long and strong enough to support the extensions you select. Be sure that your lash extensions are done by a qualified professional cosmetologist, aesthetician or permanent makeup technician.
Applying the Eyelash Extensions
When you arrive at the salon, you will lie on a facial or massage table for the application of your new lash extensions. Depending upon the skill and type of extensions you choose, your initial appointment will take from 45 minutes to three hours and costs will range from $100 to $500. A waterproof adhesive is used to apply each individual lash extension one at a time with tweezers. The adhesive is generally black, mimicking the look of mascara without the mess, but clear adhesives may also be used. Adhesives vary and your skin sensitivity should be considered. Medical-grade adhesives may not last as long but are the safest choice near the delicate eye area.
Caring for Your Eyelash Extensions
Avoid getting your eyelashes wet for the first 12 to 24 hours after application. After that you will still need to exercise care. Do not rub your eyes and be gentle when applying cosmetics. Oil-based products can dissolve the adhesive that holds the eyelash extensions in place, so be cautious of eye creams. While regular mascara can be used, avoid applying it near the root and avoid waterproof mascaras altogether. Touch-ups are recommended every two to four weeks, but this varies from person to person.
